Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's departure the family, it was managed by her mom, grandmother as well as godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder caused by the word association when she was a child. Ford's interest in acting began when she was young. She joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of weeks, she realized Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place right for her. Ford was then able to apply for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. One of her classmates was Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was not able to complete her degree in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first television appearance on the show Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in television shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. She worked on stage regularly as well as a part of the company's season 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy style, which she began adding to her set in 1996, soon gained her attention.
